Intelligent dynamic skins as a building envelope are in the forefront of the contemporary architectural discourse. Building elevations can have the capability of adjusting themselves to perfomative aspects of their environment, such as energy efficiency, optimal ventilation or to engage passersby in an interactive dialogue with their built environment. The workshop will explore the creation of dynamic movable surfaces as an envelope of a building. The group of participants will be divided into two groups, where one will focus on the solar performative aspects of surfaces and the other will focus automated movement of morphological surfaces.

The two groups will focus on the following topics respectively: Solar Origami Group: digitization of origami surface, climatic evaluation, solar and ventilation performance, evaluation of performance improvement by movable surfaces, study of movement of origami surfaces.Kinetic Morphology Group: Morphology and movement – exploring the movement and connectors (hinges), Arduino & Motor Arduino & Motor (Servo/ DC/ Stepper), linear motion (gears and pulley), motor control (control board), advanced interaction design - sensors and actuators. The surfaces will be applied as an envelope of shopping mall of Gan Hahir in the heart of Tel Aviv. The site will serve as a case-study that will define the climatic and functional needs that need to be taken into consideration while design the enveloping surface.
